In the north, west and southeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina borders with the Republic of Croatia (932 km of border), and in the east in south with Serbia and Montenegro (606 km of border).
Bosnia and Herzegovina has an exit to the Adriatic Sea of 13 km of coastline.

The country consists of four geographical units.

  • Central Bosnia, which as the name says includes the central area of the country. Geographically, this is mostly a mountain region and economically it is the most developed region of the country, in which human communities are continuously present since the very early times.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovinian high karst includes the mountain karst region of western Bosnia and Herzegovina; this is the least populated and relatively the poorest part of the country – only 9% of land is cultivated, and less than 30% of population lives in the cities.
  • Mediterranean region, the so-called Low Herzegovina, is the smallest geographical area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the background of Middle coast.
  • Northern Bosnia includes mostly flat area with cultivated land near river Sava.

Capital:
Capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Sarajevo, with a population of about 500,000 citizens.
Other major cities are: Tuzla, Zenica, Banja Luka, Mostar and Doboj.

Road Sector

The total length of roads is approximately 22,000 km, of which more then 3,700 km are arterial highways; approximately 4,100 km are regional roads; and approximately 14,000 km local roads. Road maintenance needs to be undertaken urgently to avoid further rapid deterioration.Further modernization of the road and railway networks are programmed, including construction of four-lane highway - Corridor Vc, connecting Budapest in Hungary and the Adriatic port of Ploce, and crossing all major centers in Bosnia and HerzegovinaRailways The length of railway-tracks is over 1,000 km, of which more then 250 km are double track, and approximately 800 km electrified. Further reconstruction and upgrading, of the railway network is underway.

 
Airports
There are four international airports in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The biggest one is Sarajevo international airport. Other international airports operate in Banja Luka, Mostar and Tuzla.

Waterways

River Sava, which is tributary of Danube, is the only navigable river in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It provides the reliable connections to Black Sea and a number of European countries, using waterways of river Danube and its network of canals. The main inland waterway port at Sava is Brcko The other smaller ports on the river Sava are Orasje, Bosanski Samac and Bosanska Gradiska.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has good connections with seaports at Adriatic Sea too. Port Ploce is a main seaport used by Bosnia and Herzegovina. Main alternative seaports are Rijeka, Kopar and Bar, all connected by railways and highways with all industrial centers and regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
